What is PRINCE2

In the 1970s, as IT became a major issue to commerce, the British Government set up a body, The Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA).

Their remit was to advise the Government on standards and best practice. CCTA was later renamed The Office of Government Commerce (OGC).

One of CCTA's early success stories was PRINCE, a method specifically for the management of IT projects.

It has been 'generalised' so that it is also able to cope with non-IT projects and as PRINCE2 has become the de facto standard for the management of projects in the UK.

PRINCE2 provides:

  • a standard approach to the management of projects
  • control in the management of resources and risk

The main characteristics of PRINCE2 include:

  • Product based; it concentrates on what is built rather than on the how. This enhances control of quality and greater use of skills by project staff
  • A defined organisation so that everyone working on the project has a clear understanding of the role
  • Management by exception; producing regular reports to management when things are going well and warning them if they are not. This allows management to play a full and active part in a project without it being disruptive or eating into their time
